Mir ist so heiß!
It's hot. Really hot. Not like Florida hot or Phoenix hot, but hot enough to make me want to not like it and wish that I had air conditioning (or could walk around naked). Added to this is that we rehearse Hoffmann outdoors. It's in the courtyard of the hermitage I mentioned last time. The stage is enormous. It's actually three wide stages with heights 4, 5 and 6 metres from front to back. I'll post a picture if I get the chance, but in the mean time, check out the link at the bottom of this post. I'm dreading standing out there for another 5 hours today.
Many of you know that Amy was in a car accident two weeks ago and our Corolla was totaled. Neither Amy nor the girls were hurt, but naturally, being far away in Europe, I worry constantly about their wellbeing. The Corolla's repair was prohibitively expensive so we focused on getting a new car, which we did.
Amy, with her shrewd buyers savvy, just put a down payment on a fully loaded, reasonably priced, new, carbon-grey-mica Mazda 5. If you haven’t seen this car, it's a mix between a minivan and a sports coupe (at least that’s how I'd describe it). She will pick up the car tomorrow, then pack up this seven-seater and drive to Washington State with the girls for some vacation time, (much needed vacation time).
I wanted to correct something on my last post. We do know why Mr. Bush is in Vienna today - the EU Summit. Locals are wondering why he's here because he's not EU. I've included a link for the official explanation. If you read all the things that Bush has on his EU discussion platform, it seems like a lot for just one day. But, as we all know, Summits aren't about getting things done. They're about getting your picture taken with other World Leaders!
7 Hours Later:
I just saw the final question/answer period of the EU Summit on CNN. I thought that, for the most part, Pres. Bush answered questions directly and deliberately. He was aggressive in garnering support against Iranian nuclear pursuits, North Korean nuclear testing; for the closing of Guantanamo Bay and continued military presence in Iraq. He refuted claims that the United States was becoming an increasing threat to the World. When questioned about the meager 12% European support of US Foreign policy, he replied that he does not "govern by polls," and that he still remembers September 11th, (implying, inappropriately, that most of his detractors do not). Although this was the best light I've seen him in, since 9/11, I must confess that I'm not sure that his swagger pursuaded many. He went so far as to prophesy, saying "people of the future will look back on this time and see that I was right." Pursuasion, one must remember, isn't his way. Austrian Chancellor, Wolfgang Schüssel followed Bush's remarks with genuine support on all issues; reminding attendees not only of recent terrorist attacks in Madrid and London, but also claiming the 9/11 attacks as assaults on all of Europe as well as the US. He further underlined Bush's remarks by referencing the Marshall Plan of the Post WWII years; how great a help it was to Europe and that the Plan still functions today.
Having seen the EU Summit proceedings I must confess that, although dominated by the American presence, much good was talked of. And, at least, we know what the Leaders of the Western World advertise to accomplish. Shüssel's closing remarks included an open invitation for Bush to return to Vienna, (after all, he's the first US President to attend a European Summit in 30 years). Bush simply smiled and looked at the floor. As familiar as I am with jet lag and considering his recent travel itinerary, I'm sure he's delirious with fatigue...
